Giulio Romano
Repertoire of documentary sources
A book of documents about the person and work of Giulio Romano was compiled by the scientific committee of the exhibition at Palazzo Te, dedicated to the artist in 1989.
The research project, coordinated by Daniela Ferrari, resulted in the publication of
Giulio Romano. Repertorio di fonti documentarie, edited by D. Ferrari, introduction by A. Belluzzi (PDF - 960 Kb), Pubblicazioni degli Archivi di Stato, Fonti XIV, Rome, 1992, vol. 2.
At that time 1,400 documents were published, collecting together those already known since the late nineteenth century, reissued in accordance with strict paleographic rules and relating mostly to Gonzaga correspondence in the State Archives of Mantua, but also stored in other locations.
In particular, many previously unpublished documents were added, thanks to examination of the papers of accountants, notaries, etc..
Now the documents are reproduced online, along with others brought to light in the meantime by various scholars
As new documents are found these will be added to the database in the interest of all historians concerned.
